Our Story

Bunya Range Lamb is a family-owned business operated by fifth-generation graziers on the Western Downs, Shane and Nancy Nixon. Situated just 250 km north-west of Brisbane on the Great Dividing Range, their property “The Gap” adjoins the pristine Bunya Mountains National Park.

Combining Shane’s knowledge of stud cattle and passion for using superior genetics, and Nancy’s knowledge of growing up with sheep, they decided on the fast-growing meat sheep breed, the Dorper. The sheep thrive being pasture raised with the fertile soils and unique climatic conditions.

Dorpers are known for their ability to grow, produce and flourish in lower rainfall environments while producing a product with excellent eating quality, taste and tenderness.

The main goal of Bunya Range Lamb is to co-exist with the surrounding environment while producing an ethically raised premium lamb product for direct supply to consumers. They aim to produce higher carcass weights meaning the products have more meat on the bone.

Nancy’s dream is for all families to enjoy fresh Australian pasture-raised lamb on their table, and Bunya Range Lamb was launched in 2020 providing quality ‘paddock to plate’ lamb products. The Nixons encourage people to embrace ‘the nose to tail’ way of eating, with zero waste and utilisation of the entire animal.

“Big thanks to Bunya Range Lamb for our order this month, nothing but the best customer service from start to end. The lamb would have to be the best tasting lamb we have had, and let’s not forget their sausages (satay is my fav). Keep up the good work guys! Chops are amazing, trying out the lamb and game seasoning tonight!”  —  Jody M

Farming Values

Animal welfare:

All Bunya Range Lamb sheep are raised naturally in the paddock with low-stress animal handling techniques. Breeding livestock are selected with certain genetic traits to optimise and enhance animal welfare on the farm. The sheep are 100% paddock-raised, hormone-free, and 1080-free, and only travel 60km from the farm for processing. All stock is transported by the Nixons, giving them complete control of transit welfare. The health and wellbeing of Bunya Range Lambs animals is of the highest priority and is critical to the farm’s success.

Water management:

“The Gap” relies on underground water supplies. All stock water and domestic water pumps have been converted to solar pumping systems, with water pumped to storage tanks and then circulated around the farm via gravity. The irrigations systems have been designed and built to optimise water usage in the production of animal fodder. Water retention and erosion practises are critical as the farm is very undulating. Contour banks and leaky weirs play an important role in slowing the water down on farm.

Protecting surrounding eco-systems:

Being located next to a National Park raises challenges relating to increased predator load. All the sheep are raised with livestock guardian dogs, allowing the farm animals to co-exist with the surrounding environment with no adverse impacts on either.

Sustainable pasture and soil management:

The Nixons believe in preserving and enhancing the land for future generations. By using sustainable grazing management practises such as monitoring pasture coverage, rotational grazing and planting improved pastures, the aim is to enhance the health of both the soil and the animals.

Bunya Range Lamb products are all processed at accredited facilities to each consumer’s individual specifications. We believe in providing a customised fresh product, not just a standard frozen lamb box.
